THE GREAT CONTEST
God Desigs Trials and Contests in Our Lives
A Journey from the Fall of Humankind to the Eternal Kingdom that God has Designed.
The fact that it is God who controls and arranges tests in people’s lives is not obvious to many people, but after this fact is realized it can radically change how we respond to what would otherwise be viewed as a very negative event. So, after an in-depth examination of the first great contest in Chapter 1 (the Fall), the book examines many of the contests that God has ordained, including several Old Testament and New Testament contests. In each case examined, the book explores the purpose for the contest and the good that ultimately results. In later chapters, the book examines contests that are centered around key theological issues of importance to us today, all of which have eternal consequences.
Some of the contests examined are contemporary, having evolved over the past few hundred years. Examples include the creation versus evolution conflict and the recent challenges to the traditional doctrine of hell which is defined in th Bible as being eternal, conscious punishment. The last chapter is entitled, The Ultimate Purpose. For those who are serious about their relationship with God, the glory of the Lord is an important aspect of faith to consider because it is the reason you were created: “Bring My sons from far way, And My daughters from the ends of the earth, Everyone who is called by My Name, Whom I have created for My glory” (Is 43:6-7).

THE GREAT CONTEST — CHAPTER I
EXCERPT
CHAPTER ONE
The Tree
“And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil” (Gen 2:9 ESV).
The struggle between right and wrong is an integral part of the human experience, and examination of the Bible shows that God initiates, and often participates in contests (i.e., trials, tests, and challenges) that cause this struggle. In some cases, a person may decide to do the right thing. At other times, people make willful decisions to do wrong. These decisions often have far-reaching consequences. This chapter takes an in-depth look at the first contest recorded in the Bible. To say that the outcome of this contest has far-reaching consequences would be an understatement. We learn from the book of Genesis that the stage was set by God Himself for the contest between Satan and Eve. God placed the “tree of knowledge of good and evil” in the Garden of Eden. The Lord God commanded Adam, saying, “You may freely (unconditionally) eat [the fruit] from every tree of the garden; but [only] from the tree of the knowledge (recognition) of good and evil you shall not eat, otherwise on the day that you eat from it, you shall most certainly die [because of your disobedience]” (Gen 2:16-17). At face value, it would seem that this rule was initiated to fulfill God’s desire to test Adam and Eve’s loyalty and commitment to Him. Let’s take a close look at this first contest established by God and see if we can discover additional reasons that God may have had for this contest.
The First Contest
After creating Adam and placing him in Eden to tend the garden, God initiated the first test in human history. As mentioned above, He placed a certain tree in the Garden of Eden and told Adam to never eat the fruit of that one specific tree (Gen 2:16-17). There were many other plants available for food, and the Eden environment offered a very pleasant lifestyle. Honoring God as the supreme commander of all, and obedience to God’s commands were the prime directives. This sets the rules of engagement for all future contests—obedience is equivalent to love for the Lord. Adam and Eve had direct access to God and were given the opportunity to have a meaningful relationship with God. Unfortunately, they broke the rule, failed the first test (the fall of humankind), and were driven out of the Garden of Eden. At the moment of disobedience to God’s command, sin and death entered the world and the very nature of man was transformed into a Depraved State of being. In the Depraved State, all of humankind from that day forward were born morally corrupt and wicked. In addition, every infant is born in a spiritually blind condition along with the corrupted nature (Original Sin) that is geared toward sin. What Our Readers Are Saying
As a lifelong agnostic, I expected platitudes. Instead, Dr. Manahan treated my doubts with evidence and rigor. For the first time, I understood why intelligent people believe.
Marcus Chen
I lost my daughter and was angry at God for years. The Great Contest reframed my suffering as God's appointment, not His abandonment. It gave me a path forward without bitterness.
Jennifer Walsh
I have a PhD in physics and felt torn between science and faith. Dr. Manahan shows this tension is false. Intellectually honest. Deeply moving. The best Christian book I've read.
Dr. Robert Whitfield
I've read dozens of Christian books, but this one gave me theological grounding I didn't know I was missing. Every chapter made me want to know God more intimately. I'm giving it to everyone.
Patricia Anderson
I read this in a halfway house, expecting condemnation. Instead, I found grace grounded in truth. Two years sober now—this book reminds me daily that God hasn't abandoned me.
